Tarja and Apocalyptica Unite in ‘Tango’ Video; Limited Vinyl Set for November
Tarja has unveiled the official music video for “Tango,” her collaboration with Finnish cello-metal pioneers Apocalyptica. Released October 15, the dark, cinematic performance clip brings Tarja together with Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso and Paavo Lötjönen as the song moves between symphonic tension, heavy guitars and Apocalyptica’s signature cellos.
The track first appeared on Tarja’s album Frisson Noir, released June 12. Its new visual treatment centers on time, memory and the uneasy sense that life can pass almost unnoticed — themes reflected in the song’s brooding atmosphere and black-swan imagery.
For Tarja, the collaboration was a natural fit. She said she wanted the song to feel genuinely special and turned to Apocalyptica because of her long-standing love for the cello. The band likewise noted that its members have known Tarja since the mid-1990s and had wanted to work with her for years.
The release also has a physical component for collectors. A limited 10-inch vinyl edition of “Tango” is due November 27, with only 500 copies planned worldwide. The record pairs the album version with an unreleased piano demo and an unreleased band demo that are not part of the standard digital release.
The pairing connects two of Finland’s most recognizable heavy-music exports. Tarja helped define the modern symphonic-metal vocal style, while Apocalyptica built an international career by turning classically trained cello performance into a metal instrument of its own.
Frisson Noir is billed as Tarja’s heaviest solo album to date and also features appearances from Dani Filth, Marko Hietala and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The album was mixed by Neal Avron.
