The Smashing Pumpkins have released “Black Stars,” a new song for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (The Album). The track arrived October 16 and reunites the band with producer Butch Vig, bringing a familiar creative partnership into a new setting.

Vig helped shape the band’s early sound on Gish and 1993’s Siamese Dream. The new single marks their first recording collaboration since the Siamese Dream era—a connection that gives this soundtrack release particular weight for longtime Pumpkins fans.

According to coverage of the announcement, Billy Corgan was working on solo material when the band was invited to contribute to the film project. Corgan brought Vig into the process to help choose the song that would fit the world of Sunrise on the Reaping.

“Black Stars” is available now alongside a music video. The soundtrack arrives November 13 through MCA, ahead of the film’s November 20 theatrical release.

For The Sound 228 listeners, the draw is the reunion itself: one of alternative rock’s defining bands reconnecting with a producer closely associated with its breakthrough years while releasing fresh material.
