Sometimes, when I write about a band, I already know a lot about them and don’t have to do a lot of research – just fact-checking. Other times I know the songs, but not a lot about the background of the band. That is often a fun experience, because I really get to do a deep dive and learn what makes a band tick. I often find out things that make me a bigger fan of the band than I already was.

That’s the case with New York City metalcore band Advents. This band has been around for about five or six years, but it looks like they are really about to take off. This past Monday they announced their debut full-length album, A Bitter Truth You Can’t Undo, which will be released Friday, July 17th via InVogue Records. There have been a few songs previously released off the new album, and they’re tremendous. The full album is sure to be something special.

One of the songs off the ten-track album, “Never Heaven”, just dropped today, as a surprise from the band to their fans who always eagerly anticipate new Advents music. I’ll discuss the new song later in this piece. First, I want to share some history and background on Advents.

Band members of Advents are: Tyler Simpson (vocals); Kevin Chapilliquen (guitar); Sebastian Ferlin (guitar); and Joe Koza (drums). The band has been around for about five years.  Advents released a four-song self-titled EP in 2022, and in 2024 dropped another four-song EP, called “PERSONA MELODIES”. It’s been all singles since then, but now everything is building up to the debut album coming in July.

While doing my research about Advents, I came across a really great interview with Joe and Tyler on the Behind the Rock with DC podcast.  I enjoyed listening to the interview and learning more about these musicians and their band, and I am including some of what I learned in this story.  There is a Spotify link to the interview below!

Drummer Joe shared that Advents began sometime around 2020 or 2021, as a collection of musicians who had been in other bands that ended. They found each other through a network of New York City musicians. All of them liked heavy music, so they got together and started sharing ideas.

Tyler is the most recent member to join the band as their lead vocalist. He had received an email about a year ago from the band’s manager who found him through other projects he had been in. He sent Tyler a Spotify link to listen to the band’s music, and Tyler thought it would be a perfect fit.

Meanwhile, Joe had listened to the music of Tyler's band Coping Method, and he knew his vocals were exactly what the band was looking for. He told their manager they needed to do everything possible to get Tyler on board.

They all got on a Zoom call, and Tyler drove up to New York and met everyone. They all got along really well, and after a few rehearsals the band asked him to join.

One of the coolest things about Advents is all of the members have varying tastes in music. They also all have an open mind about different genres and styles. This is reflected in the band’s songwriting. Working alongside producer Jonathan Dolese of KonKrete Studios, who they consider a fifth band member, they combine their musical influences and knowledge and expertise to create their own unique sound.

The band members of Advents also pride themselves on being real and authentic in their music. They’re not just looking to appease the algorithm or write something because it’s the norm or what everyone is listening to.  As Joe says, "Whenever I listen to music, I want to believe what I'm listening to. It’s the same with what we write. We know what kind of music we want to make, and we write music we want to hear. I want to believe the music we’re making when I hear it.”

The new song, "Never Heaven", has a haunting, melancholy quality. Like all of this band's music, it is passionate and soulful, yet also packs that heavy punch of metalcore.  I don't think the music of Advents fits into one specific genre.  Metalcore, post-hardcore, hard rock -- fans of any and all of that will enjoy the uniqueness and creativity of Advents. Their music is the kind that will move you deeply and stay ingrained in your soul long after listening to it.

Tyler shared his thoughts on the meaning behind “Never Heaven” in a press release by InVogue Records.

“When writing ‘Never Heaven’ my goal was to explore the idea of dark desire, where pain can also feel sacred. I was inspired by fantasy romance novels and really wanted to bridge a heavy, dark song with one that also felt sexy. When we were working on the instrumental, I immediately felt it was designed to be a dark love ballad, and it all fell together after that.”

Advents is surrounded by an amazing team, which helps raise their creativity to an even higher level. “Never Heaven” was written by the band members of Advents, along with Jonathan Dolese and Cody Mackenzie Hamann. The track was produced, mixed, and mastered by Jonathan. Drums were engineered by Anthony Potenza of Studio A Recordings. The art and creative direction for the upcoming album, including “Never Heaven” and the previous released songs, has been done by Ty Dalton Trehern.

During the Behind the Rock with DC podcast interview, Tyler talked about social media.  The band is working hard to be more interactive on socials, because they know how important it is to engage with fans. They’ve been going out and setting up as if it were for a full music video, but instead they’re shooting short form content. That being said, the band is not ruling out future music videos for songs off the upcoming album. We’ll all have to stay tuned to see what’s to come!

Based off the songs already released off A Bitter Truth You Can’t Undo, the album is going to be a true work of art, and one that will make a big impact in the metalcore scene and beyond. Listeners will be drawn into the themes of desire, emotional conflict, and self-destruction, brought out by the mix of Tyler’s hard and clean vocals combined with the heavy instrumentals of these talented musicians.

For fans who want to see Advents live, just this afternoon the band announced a summer tour with The Wise Man's Fear. This is sure to be a very popular and really fun tour, so make sure to get your tickets early!

Advents is on pretty much every social media platform, so it should be easy for fans to find them and follow their journey as they release their new album and hit the road this summer. You can follow Advents on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, the band’s website, and YouTube.
